Loteria
2024
Loteria is a card game I often played as a kid with my family, something akin to a Mexican version of bingo. Rather than numbers and letters the game makes use of symbol cards, partially borrowed from the common symbols of tarot and partially referencing symbols in Mexican culture. Typically to play everyone has a board, the dealer calls what a winning board looks like. Ie. a single row, a column, an X, four corners, an L, a square. The dealer then proceeds to draw cards and call them, accompanied by a short lyric that is often comedic or playful. These lyrics are often recalled by memory and can shift depending on the dealer. As cards are called you mark on your board with a small object, sometimes a bean or a piece of candy. Once someone's board is filled out with a winning pattern as the dealer called it then they yell loteria and the round is over.
I have been collecting symbols for myself, some borrowed, bought, inherited, or gifted. These symbols are gathered as I attempt to recall their lyrics, of course with every call I recall a little more. I attach stories, poems, thoughts to my symbols, situating them, sorting them, adding on to them. To play, use any loteria set that you can typically get at your latin deli. Play as normal, but when you draw a card, read the number in the corner and the corresponding number listed below. Play as many rounds as you like.
